7:15am - Boone, North Carolina

Never sleep well first night on the road and I’m starving!

Sunrise Grill just up from our hotel is exactly what I needed: strong coffee, eggs & bacon with a side of easy- going southern hospitality that gets me every time. I’d live in this town in a heartbeat! Boone is home to Appalachian State University and a super charming downtown scene teeming with folks coming here to ski and get away from it all. Reminds me of a small Bolder, Colorado. Love it.

8:30am – Crossnore, North Carolina

Today I’m here to interview and learn from master wood turner, Alan Hollar. He’s been turning bowls for decades and by the looks of his work, is a truly skilled craftsman.  I can’t wait to make the chips fly but the schedule today is a little different – the turning comes later but after I meet Alan and see his shop set up, I’m ready to get going now. Alan’s pieces and work methodology are inspiring. He’s a professional instructor as well and it’s so evident as he talks about the process – clear, concise, encouraging.

10:20am - Gathering Wood

Alan and I chose some nice wood for turning and got the chainsaw going. THAT got my blood pumping – and trying to fit the go-pro on the saw…sounds crazy, but it worked. Can’t wait to see that footage.
