Now that my bowl is dry, David is getting it ready to be decorated. Watching David “trim the foot” is mesmerizing. He has a confidence and an ease in which he works the clay that only comes after years of experience.
David is known for his beautiful design work, inspired by the decorative traditions found throughout Africa. I was able to try a basic version of one of his more intricate designs on one of the bowls I made yesterday!
Next up glazing! David has chosen to use colors that will accent his carved designs. Understanding glazes is an important part of ceramics. The color we are putting on these bowls will look very different after being fired in the kiln.
