It is hard to believe that we will be able to transform this big piece of bamboo into the incredibly narrow pieces we will need to make the standard hexagonal fly rod. And of course it is always fun to bring out the torch to beautifully scorch the wood.

Casimira and I are tasked with creating the smaller pieces of bamboo that we will be working with. Then Jeff showed me how to plane down the six pieces into a triangular shape so that they can be placed together to create the rod. It is hard to convey how narrow the bamboo gets on the tip, and still in the shape of a perfect triangle.

Last step for the day, gluing and binding the pieces together and letting them set over night. It was Jeff’s idea to augment this binding machine so that a regular power drill could be used as the power source.
